We Missed It All

We never could talk it out.

I was too quiet,

you were too proud.

So summer ended

way before it began—

I guess it’s my fault

for making plans.

There was no rain or storm—

the wind just blew,

and the air got warm.

The heat never blistered,

and my eyes had lost

their glitter by the

end of May.

I went to sleep before

the sun even set.

The pain burned in

my mind like a

lone cigarette.

You said you couldn’t

take the heat,

so you moved back

up North and

left me be.

My swimsuit

never saw the line.

Tybee Island sand

never got in my eye.

The bars closed

for the fall.

We missed the

party and the sun.

We missed it all.

The boat never

touched the water,

and neither did we.

I stayed on dry land

‘cause you were too

afraid of the sea.
